Tales of Resistance: Global Queer Courage & Indigenous Wisdom

This October, Bridges: A Unitarian Universalist Network invites you to journey with us through 31 Days of “Tales of Resistance: Global Queer Courage & Indigenous Wisdom.”

Each day, we will lift up stories from around the world, stories of resilience, reclamation, and transformation that honor both LGBTQ+ History Month and Indigenous Peoples Day. This month-long celebration recognizes that queer and Indigenous lives are woven into a shared tapestry of survival, creativity, and resistance to systems that seek to erase or silence them.

We begin with the acknowledgment that colonization and oppression have long targeted queer and Indigenous peoples alike. Yet across generations, communities have carried forward courage, wisdom, and joy, whether in ancient traditions of Two-Spirit identity, in global movements for LGBTQ+ liberation, or in the everyday acts of resilience that preserve culture and dignity.

Throughout the month, our weekly themes will guide us:

  • Week 1 (Days 1–7): Remembering the Roots – Honoring ancestral knowledge, Indigenous sovereignty, and hidden queer histories.
  • Week 2 (Days 8–14): Voices of Resistance – Activists, artists, and leaders who transformed oppression into liberation.
  • Week 3 (Days 15–21): Stories of Reclamation –  Revitalizing language, culture, and identities once suppressed.
  • Week 4 (Days 22–28): Transforming the Future –  Queer youth, Indigenous futurism, and global movements for justice.
  • Week 5 (Days 29–31): Carrying the Fire –  Closing reflections, interwoven legacies, and visions of wholeness.

Together, these stories remind us that resistance is not just about survival, it is about creating beauty, community, and possibility in the face of adversity.

As Unitarian Universalists, we affirm that Love is interdependence. By honoring global queer courage and Indigenous wisdom, we deepen our commitment to solidarity and to building a world where every story, every body, and every spirit can thrive.
