Day 8. Visionaries of Science and Discovery (February 8 to 14).

This week we celebrate the innovators whose “single thoughts” became the tangible technologies and medical breakthroughs we rely on today. Black Excellence in science is often a story of brilliance flourishing in the face of exclusion: it is the “hidden” work that eventually becomes impossible to ignore.

The Art of Innovation

We see this brilliance in Gladys West whose mathematical modeling of the Earth’s shape provided the foundation for GPS technology. Her work is a reminder that every time we navigate our way through the world, we are standing on the shoulders of her genius. In our modern era, we look to Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, key scientist behind the COVID 19 vaccine, who transformed years of research into a global tool for survival.

These visionaries show us that excellence is a form of service. Whether it is Dr. Charles Drew revolutionizing blood plasma storage or the Human Computer, Dr. Katherine Johnson calculating the trajectories that took us to the stars, their work proves that when we remove barriers to brilliance, the whole world benefits.

Reflection: Which modern technology or scientific advancement are you most grateful for today? How can we better support the “hidden figures” in our own schools and workplaces?
