Day 4. Dongzhi: The Han Chinese Festival of Returning Yang Energy.

The Dongzhi Festival (Winter Solstice Festival) is one of the most important Han Chinese holidays, celebrating the return of Yang (masculine, light, active) energy. This moment, when the shortest day gives way to lengthening daylight, marks the turning point where the forces of the universe begin their upward swing toward warmth and productivity.

Balance of Yin and Yang

According to the philosophy of Yin and Yang, the winter solstice represents the extreme peak of Yin (feminine, dark, passive) energy. From this point onward, Yang energy is symbolically reborn and begins to grow. This festival is a solemn reminder of harmony and balance in the cosmos. Families gather to worship heaven and ancestors, showing respect for the cycle of life.

Unity and Renewal

A central custom is the communal making and eating of tāngyuán-small, brightly colored glutinous rice balls served in soup. The round shape of the dumplings symbolizes reunion and the completion of the year’s cycle. Dongzhi is a time to reconnect with family, practice filial piety, and prepare for the coming New Year. For Unitarian Universalists, the festival models how spiritual practice is rooted in cosmic balance and connection to one’s ancestors.
