Day 28. Reclaiming Ceremony – Spiritual Sovereignty and Renewal.

Many Indigenous ceremonies were once outlawed under colonial rule. Reclaiming these sacred practices today is an act of defiance and rebirth. From sun dances to sweat lodges, these ceremonies reawaken ancestral memory and reconnect people to land and spirit.

Sovereignty in Practice

Reclamation is not nostalgia-it is a declaration of survival. It says: we are still here, still sacred, still in relationship with the divine. By practicing these ceremonies, Indigenous nations assert spiritual sovereignty, taking control of their religious and cultural destiny free from external interference. This practice is foundational to healing historical trauma and restoring community health.

Spiritual Freedom

For Unitarian Universalists, this reminds us that spiritual freedom includes the right to practice one’s faith in wholeness and without fear. Supporting the reclamation of Indigenous ceremony aligns with our commitment to justice and affirming the inherent worth and dignity of every person’s path to the sacred.

Reflection: How do you make space for spiritual practices that honor the Earth and your ancestors?
