Day 27. Global Pride Movements From Manila to Maputo.

Pride is not the same everywhere, but everywhere, it is revolutionary. From the bustling streets of Manila to the vibrant avenues of Maputo, Pride marches across the globe reclaim public space for queer joy, resistance, and survival. Each Pride event reflects the local history of struggle, resilience, and courage.

In some places, Pride looks like rainbow flags filling the city center; in others, it is small, quiet gatherings in private spaces where queer people can finally breathe freely. Whether in regions where queer rights are celebrated or in places where they are criminalized, Pride is an act of defiance against erasure.

Global Pride movements remind us that liberation is both universal and deeply local. Pride connects us across borders, teaching us that visibility is not just celebration, it is survival.

Stories of Pride Across the World

Metro Manila Pride in the Philippines has grown from a small gathering in the 1990s to tens of thousands marching for equality, even in the face of political repression.

Maputo Pride in Mozambique celebrates resilience, with activists facing harassment yet still organizing to honor LGBTQ+ visibility and rights.

Johannesburg Pride in South Africa, the oldest on the continent, continues to inspire regional Pride events, reminding the world that queer liberation in Africa is vibrant and ongoing.

“Pride is more than a parade, it is a declaration that we exist, we resist, and we deserve joy.” – Global Pride Organizer
