Day 26. Matriarchs Rising – Women Leading with Wisdom.

Across Turtle Island and beyond, Indigenous women are leading movements for sovereignty, climate action, and cultural revival. Matriarchal leadership is rooted in balance, care, and accountability to community and creation.
From the legacy of Chief Wilma Mankiller among the Cherokee Nation to contemporary leaders like Tara Houska and Casey Camp-Horinek, Indigenous women have always been at the heart of justice. They lead not through domination, but through relationship.
Their leadership invites Unitarian Universalists to reimagine power as nurture, to practice leadership as love in action.
“Matriarchy is not about women ruling, it’s about everyone living in balance.” – Dr. Layla June Johnston
Reflection: Who are the matriarchs who lead through love and integrity in your life?
