Day 24. Diwali Music: Songs of Triumph.

Description During Diwali, music-both devotional and celebratory-is a central way communities welcome light and prosperity. Traditional bhajans and festive songs narrate the triumph of Rama over darkness, Krishna’s exploits, and moral victories of faith and courage. Drums, bells, and strings create a soundscape that mirrors the festival’s themes: joy, victory, and spiritual awakening.

Music during Diwali reinforces communal identity and intergenerational learning. Children learn through song, adults reaffirm values, and neighborhoods collectively illuminate streets with lamps and rhythm. Sound amplifies light, transforming homes and public spaces into sacred spaces of hope and shared purpose.

UU communities understand music as a vessel for spiritual expression, ethical reflection, and social connection. Diwali teaches that joy and justice are inseparable: celebrating light requires both awareness of the darkness and intentional acts of illumination. Singing together strengthens covenantal bonds and encourages active participation in cultivating hope.

Music is the celestial sound which is given to man to enjoy and learn from.” – Ravi Shankar
