Day 23. Climate Justice as Kinship – Protecting Future Generations.

For Indigenous peoples, climate justice is family justice. It is the defense of life itself, of rivers, forests, children, and ancestors yet unborn. Movements like Idle No More and Standing Rock have shown the world that protecting the Earth is not an act of charity, it is a sacred obligation.

Indigenous activists remind us that the climate crisis is not just environmental, but relational. When we see the Earth as kin, not commodity, our moral compass shifts. As Unitarian Universalists committed to interdependence, we are called to live as kin with the planet, to listen, learn, and act in solidarity with those leading the way.

“We are the ancestors of the future. What we do now matters.” — Autumn Peltier (Anishinaabe water protector)

  • Follow the Indigenous Environmental Network – a grassroots organization of Indigenous peoples and individuals in addressing environmental and economic justice. IEN builds the capacity of Indigenous communities and tribal governments to protect sacred sites, land, water, air, natural resources, and the health of all living things, while fostering economically sustainable communities. It accomplishes this through maintaining an informational clearinghouse, organizing campaigns, developing policy initiatives, and building alliances globally.
  • Watch The Condor & The Eagle  – a documentary on Indigenous climate leadership that follows four leaders on a trans-continental journey from Canada to the Amazon, aiming to unite the peoples of North and South America around the meaning of Climate Justice. The documentary showcases a spiritual renaissance, confronting colonialism and resistance, featuring Indigenous women leaders and exposing the extractive economy.
