Building Beloved Community: Leaders of Peace, Solidarity, and Social Change (January 22–28).

Inspired by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and global peaceworkers, this week uplifts those who call us deeper into compassion, connection, and shared liberation. If dreaming is the spark and organizing is the engine, then the Beloved Community is the destination. This is where the “single thought” finally becomes a shared reality. It is the hard, daily work of practicing peace and building a world where everyone belongs, not by accident, but by design.

The Architecture of Solidarity

The Beloved Community is not a place of perfect agreement, but a place of radical persistence. We look to James & Grace Lee Boggs who spent seven decades in Detroit teaching us that “revolution is not about a single event,” but about the “evolution” of our souls and our neighborhoods. They showed us that building community requires us to grow our hearts as large as our demands for justice.

We see this commitment in Thich Nhat Hanh who coined the term “Engaged Buddhism” and walked alongside Dr. King, proving that inner peace and social justice are two sides of the same coin. His life reminds us that solidarity is a form of “interbeing,” the realization that our liberation is inextricably bound to one another.

Building this community is Dorothy Day, opening houses of hospitality, transforming the abstract idea of “charity” into the lived reality of “solidarity.” It is the spirit of Nelson Mandela, who understood that “to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” These leaders show us that peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of a connection strong enough to weather it.

“The end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the Beloved Community. It is this type of spirit and this type of love that can transform opposers into friends.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Reflection: In our community, we are the architects of this belonging. How are we building the world you are dreaming of? Let us know where in your life you are being called to move deeper into Beloved community.
